About the Gaspee Project

The Gaspee Project is a grassroots citizen initiative whose mission is to preserve the values and principles upon which our beloved state of Rhode Island was founded. Like the colonists almost 250 years ago who banded together off of Gaspee Point in Warwick to stand up to a tyrannical monarchy, the Gaspee Project is dedicated to providing a forum where concerned Rhode Islanders, today, can make their collective voices heard and to coordinate advocacy efforts to change the failed status-quo in Rhode Island.

Currently Gaspee is asking you to take action to STOP RHODEMAP RI and to SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL CHOICE.

Please surf our website to find out how you can make your voice heard.

  • I’m a local business owner with a 9 truck fleet and I’m vehemently against any non-voter approved borrowing by our shady government (apparently you have all forgot 38 Studio’s already)…………………Now to tell you, I’m an board member of the RI Trucking Association, I’ve been a CDL driver for 40 years, I’ve owned a fleet in RI for 17 years………………….so I’m just not a crackpot spouting off!

The only people who have shown rabid support for this bill are the people who are already lined up at the public trough………………..I know this because I sat through 13 hours of hearings at the Statehouse over 2 days!

The governor numbers are flawed and skewed to give you the illusion that this bill will solve all of RI woes for the 30 years of inefficiency, waste, fraud, lack of maintenance and duct tape repairs that the DOT office has brought upon RI even though they’ve had an annual budget of some 500 MILLION dollars a year. So, it’s easy to point fingers at one group and say “They did it!” yes, the trucks do put more stress on the bridges and the governor says well, they must pay for what they’ve done! We truckers, don’t deny that fact………………..we have also stepped to the plate and ASKED, (yes, we voluntarily ASKED for the governor to RAISE the diesel fuel tax instead of borrowing MORE money!) and our proposition was call “Laughable” All trucks that pass though RI, pay what is known as IFTA Tax. For EVERY truck that drives EVERY MILE in RI we pay the state per mile!

Well folks, I have to tell you………………..that a rot spot though a 1 inch thick I beam that was the size of a softball, didn’t get there from a truck going by and it didn’t get that big overnight! Not even a few weeks, a few months or a couple of years……………………nosiree………………….that took DECADES of salt and water damage!! Of course I could have stopped all that damage with a paint brush and some Rust-o-leum…………………….had the bridge been properly inspected! And by inspection, I don’t mean driving by and saying “Yep, It’s still standing, let hit the links now!”

Now, this doesn’t really affect me because I don’t have tractor trailers, but I know enough that when I hear the words “It’s great for RI!”……………..it’s usually not!

Back to the toll bill………………..first, the 60% of the out of state trucking that are “getting a free ride” when in fact they don’t (remember we pay IFTA)……………are bringing goods into RI, as we neither grow all of our food here nor do we manufacture anything anymore! They counted trucks coming in at Hopkinton, but didn’t count the trucks leaving in Pawtucket to see if they were making deliveries or passing though!

Count on all deliveries for food, medicine, clothing, electronics, water, fuel, tires, home heating oil…………..every single product you use comes here from out of state by truck!

The will point to jobs being created, those jobs will still be available when Federal Funds are issued, but they don’t tell you about the jobs that’ll be lost……………..UPS has already shifted tractors out of state, Greylawn Foods who are the only refrigerated warehouse left in RI, will more than likely close, Ocean State Job Lot testified that it’ll cost that company more than 1 million dollars in tolls and numerous other small business like mine will wither away…………..after all we are already known as the state with the worst business climate in the US, let’s prove it further!

Some will head to the Attleboro area or are headed to Fall River, otherwise there’s no reason for truckers to be coming into RI. This stretch of Rte 95 is one of the most deadly parts of the whole Rte 95 highway system and the Route 95 bottlenecks at the the Rte 195, Rte 6/10 and Rte 146 interchange are legendary among truckers……………also the Rte 128/93 fiasco as well into Boston………………nope, most trucks divert to Rte 395 and up to the Mass Pike (it’s only $11.00 to Boston and it’s a straight shot in)

There’s is NO GUARANTEE that this will not apply to cars as well……………..even though they assure you it won’t include cars……………….next General Assembly is not bound by the “promise” of this General Assembly………………….they can (and they will probably have to because the “truck count” they use is about 3X higher than the one done by the RI Trucking Association)………………so just because you aren’t paying the toll at the toll gantry………….yet………………..you will be paying it on the prices for all you buy…………………….until the bank wants their money and they are short revenue and then they decide to toll the cars to make up the shortfall!

In other consideration, 1/2 the money they want to borrow will NEVER be spent on a bridge or highway…………………that money goes to the toll gantry company and Wall Street! (Same place the Teacher’s Union money goes, ask them about how happy they are with that)

In other consideration, these gantry’s will not be manned and they will use EZ Pass technology……………..I can put my EZ Pass in a Wise Potato chip bag and it’ll never be read by the toll reader (Toll Avoidance Advice for Dummies)……………..My 18 wheeler will have a cloaking device for $1.99 (it’s called a Faraday Shield for you who are not up on your electrical engineering, LOL)

Then there are alternate route……………….Rte 3 and Rte 1 both parallel
Rte 95………………..the DOT’s answer to that is to station the State Police at these bypass routes. They haven’t included all the costs of the “enforcement” efforts. They will point to all the “fines” they collected at the Pawtucket Bridge as proof the “truckers” don’t care……………….let me tell you something that any trucker will tell you…………………we work on slim margins! The boys who drove through that despite the signs posted, either it wasn’t their company or they couldn’t read English and I doubt many of them still have a job!

Which brings me to the last point, many independent truckers and/or Mexican truckers…………don’t get riled, Mexican trucking companies are allowed on US highways) don’t own the trailers they carry……………….they won’t care one bit, nope…………….you’re going to be fining trailers that, by the time you find out who owns them, are in another city, carrying a different load and the state has no proof as to who was hauling and/or driving that rig. (See Toll Avoidance for Dummies")

In closing, there are other great funding plans that have also been proposed that do not require borrowing and yet the Governor and RIDOT are insistent on going through with this plan…………….which is “Great for RI”

Government borrowing without taxpayer approval is the same as taxation without representation…………………that’s what started this great nation.

Write or call your Senator and Representative today and stand up for yourselves now because Tuesday, it’ll all be too late…………………..we are, after all one of the Original 13 Colonies that stood up to the English Nation and said “NO MORE” Rise up again in the spirit of our forefathers!

    Thank you all.
